The CBD industry in the United Kingdom has a little over a year to apply for safety evaluations in order for their products to remain on shelves. The United Kingdom’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) made this announcement last Thursday. They also set dosage recommendations and warned pregnant and nursing women to avoid CBD.
CBD and its extracts have been considered a “novel food” in the UK since January 2019, and the Novel Foods Catalogue has been updated to reflect this change.
Food businesses should apply for authorisation of their CBD extracts and isolates. This is the only route to compliance for these CBD products. The deadline to submit a valid application is March 31, 2021.
The guidelines came as many other nations – including Australia, Canada and the United States – have said they’re reviewing CBD safety in food and nutritional supplements but not yet endorsed its sale or said how it should be produced, prompting a global morass of confusion about cannabidiol’s legality.
